Abstract:Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing upper gastrointestinal diseases, particularly upper gastrointestinal tumors. However, inadequate mucosal cleanliness in the digestive tract often leads to missed diagnoses. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of scoring systems for upper gastrointestinal mucosal cleanliness. Five validated scales have been introduced including the Crema Stomach Cleaning Score, the Polprep scoring system, the Barcelona Scale, the Toronto Upper Gastrointestinal Cleaning Score, and the Gastroscopy Rate of Cleanliness Evaluation Scale. These tools each exhibit distinct characteristics in anatomical division and evaluation criteria, yet they also present certain limitations. In the future, artificial intelligence technology may overcome the limitations of manual assessment, promoting the widespread application of scoring systems for upper gastrointestinal mucosal cleanliness in clinical practice.
